How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants

By Umar Zakaria, founder of frontage. · 17 October 2026 · 6 min read

More customers now ask an AI assistant "who's the best dental clinic near me?" instead of scrolling through search results. The assistant names a few businesses, and the rest might as well not exist. To be one of those names, AI tools need to be able to read your website, trust your details and see that other people talk about you.

Seven steps that make a real difference

1. Let AI tools read your website

Some websites accidentally block AI crawlers in their robots.txt file. Make sure crawlers such as GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are allowed, and that your key information is in the page itself, not hidden inside images or only loaded by scripts.

2. Answer real questions clearly

AI assistants love content they can quote. Write pages and FAQs that answer what customers actually ask, such as prices, timings, areas you serve and what's included, with the answer in the first sentence.

3. Add structured data

Structured data is hidden code that tells machines exactly what your business is: name, location, services, prices, opening hours and FAQs. It helps both Google and AI tools understand you without guessing.

4. Keep your details identical everywhere

Your business name, address, phone number, website and description should match on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, social media and directories. Conflicting details make you look less trustworthy to machines and to people.

5. Get listed where AI assistants look

Several AI assistants draw on search engines such as Google and Bing when answering. A complete Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing, plus relevant directories for your industry, give them something solid to find.

6. Earn reviews and mentions

AI assistants weigh what other people say about you, not just what you say about yourself. Genuine reviews on Google and industry sites, press mentions and partner links all build that trust over time.

7. Check what AI says about you, every month

Ask the main assistants the questions your customers would ask, such as "best fit-out company in Business Bay", and note whether you appear and who appears instead. Answers vary between assistants and change over time, so track the trend rather than any single answer.

A bonus step: llms.txt

llms.txt is a plain-text summary of your business placed at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt, written for AI tools. It is an emerging standard rather than an official requirement, so treat it as a helpful extra, not a guarantee.

Is this different from SEO?

It overlaps a lot. Good SEO helps, but a business can rank well on Google and still be missing from AI answers if its facts are inconsistent, its pages don't answer questions clearly, or nobody else mentions it online.
